For Mike, my stepdad. He came into my life when I was nine and I made it very hard for him. He never tried to replace my dad; he just kept showing up. He spent two whole summers building me a treehouse because I said I wanted one once, and he let me choose the color of the roof, which was a terrible purple. He taught me to change a tire in the rain and said the trick is to swear quietly. He drove six hours to my college graduation with a homemade sign that was spelled wrong. Every Saturday he still makes pancakes shaped like states, and they all look like Ohio. I want a song that makes him cry a little, to say thank you for choosing to be my dad when he didn't have to.
